Hello and welcome to my social media marketing blog!

I started out as a graphic design student at Seneca College in Toronto and after one year I switched to the Integrated Marketing and Communications program at St. Lawrence College. I wanted to learn about the intentions behind certain designs. During the program, I learned about social media marketing and it quickly became my passion. Since graduation, I’ve had a few contract jobs working as a graphic designer or content creator. Having graphic design skills is an asset in marketing and content creation, there are many other reasons why I love my chosen path:

It’s never boring.
There are so many social media platforms to work with. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are holding strong. Some brands may find some platforms more effective than others, depending on who their target market is and what they are selling. Some platforms end up shutting down completely, like Vine.

It’s creative.
When running a social media account for a business, I get to let my creativity shine!  I can take pictures of their products, their employees, or anything else that might be relevant. My photography and design skills come in handy here, some projects require a DSLR camera, others just a simple phone camera. Being able to do touch ups in Photoshop really makes a difference. Clear and bright photos are extremely important to me and sometimes all it takes is a simple adjustment.
I also love checking out business’s Instagram feeds, a great example is Sterling Jewelry in Kingston: https://www.instagram.com/sterlingjewellery/ Each post is professional, clear, and eye catching.

Writing.
Taking and posting photos is great, but I also need to make sure all of the captions are appropriate. I need to sound professional and usually have to get the message across in as few words as possible. People want to get their information fast.

Staying local.
Kingston is very important to me. Not too big and not too small, the cost of living is affordable and there is always something to do. Kingston also has a thriving social media community, people here love interacting with small businesses on social media. The hashtag #YGK is especially popular on Twitter and Instagram. You can follow the hashtag and see what everyone is up to.
